"This year's Burning Man will be the tallest ever, and will stand on top of a four-story obelisk. The monument will be draped with flags of countries from all over the world. Inside the obelisk, a double-helix like strand will create a spiral staircase that will resemble DNA. The "Man" will be burned on Burn Night on Saturday, August 30th."

The design is inconsequential to me, on one level. Of greater import are the questions, What does "the Man" represent at this time, and why are we burning him?
After receiving a volunteer pin from Burning Man that reads "Working for the Man", and engaging in so many various responses to the Man being burned early, I find it ...disturbing, to say the least, that no one is talking about why we burn the man AT ALL at this point. What does it mean in 2008? Empty ritual or.........????
I think it's somewhat ironic that the man sits upon what looks to be a skyscraper. What does that signify? Sorta puts the man above the crowd and out of reach. He should do some crowd surfing. The ravers will love him for it! :)
I'm one of those old skool burners (putting on craggy old person's voice): "Ah remembah back in tha day when they used'ta burn tha man on hay bales!"
I missed those days. You could really get up close and personal with the effigy then. Not any more.
I am an old school burner too, well, I guess you could call me that by
now. My first year was 2000, the last year that the man was on hay
bales, and I miss that as well. I totally hear what you are saying
about getting up close and personal with the effigy, in fact one of my
favorite memories from my first year was just chilling on the bales at
the base of the man with a bunch of newfound friends.
That said, after reading your post I thought it to be quite ironic
that the man was burned early on a year that he was for the most part
inaccessible, and it never happened when he could be gotten to easily
by the general population of BRC. I know it was not the first year of
the man not being reachable, 01 he was on that giant platform that
looked like and A, and I missed the Vault of Heaven year, but from
pictures it didn't look like you could get up there easily.
Just an observation, no real theory behind it.
